EDUCATION A SINE QUA NON FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH

V.M.  Khaleelur Rahman

The well-known sayings of Prophet Mohammed (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) on education are : (1)  Seeking education is compulsory for every Muslim, and  (2) Seek education even if it is in China.  The holy Qur’an and the sayings of the Prophet stress the importance of knowledge and wisdom one should possess to lead a life wroth the name with all dignity and decorum.

In spite of all these commands Islam has given for education and made it mandatory for every male and female, it is very unfortunate that Indian Muslims are educationally and economically backward.  The educational backwardness is the main cause for our economic backwardness, superstitious beliefs and many other problems we are suffering from.  It is not easy for an ignorant person to face the present challenges of life.  Of course there is some awakening among us now but it is not as much as among  our non-Muslim brethren.

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar Muslims are still more backward educationally and economically even though they constitute as high as 18.55% and 15.95% of the total state populations.  There are 3,30,00,000 Muslims in U.P. and 1,41,58,939 Muslims in Bihar.  The main cause for their backwardness is attributed to their still continuing “pre-partition day anti British mindset”.  58 years have passed since we attained freedom but some Muslim “leaders” in these two states still think that English is the language of the British and there is no necessity for Muslims to learn it and it is accepted by the Muslims there.  This is the reason why they are not advanced and lagging behind in every field of activity.  The pity is that they are not learning from the shining examples of educationally and economically advanced Muslims in some other States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, etc. but trying to impose their mindset on others with different names.  Islamic image is tarnished beyond imagination.  We required Iqbals and Sir Syeds for the reformation of the Indian Muslims.

The historical reasons responsible for the hatred of English education among Muslims are no more valid now.  We must have the education necessary for our times.  We have to produce more and more doctors, engineers, IT professionals and business magnates.

Let us take Ambur.  If we look at the educational activities of Muslims there, there is no doubt that they have marked forward understanding the importance of modern education.  There are many engineers and other professionals including many B.U.M.S. Doctors.  The number of Muslim students in the native Mazharul Uloom College is on the increase.  Many Ambur Muslim students are getting education in some other nearby Engineering and Science and Arts Colleges and also in Chennai.  Some Muslim girls have also become B.D.S. dental doctors.  Many are studying B.E., B.D.S, M.B.A. and some important IT courses.  It is also a fact that many Muslim boys and girls have achieved laurels in their schools and colleges.  If proper educational atmosphere is created and encouragement is given, our students can prove their mettle.  They are second to none.  They have got all the capacities and potentialities.  What is miserably lacking is the right encouragement.  We feel that this interest should be extended to M.B.B.S and M.D medical education also.  We find that only one or two have become M.B.B.S doctors during the past 25 years.  Dr. Ahmed Ali, Dr. Jameel Ahmed, Dr. Samiullah, Dr. Farooq, Dr. Nagal Akbar, Dr. Ibrahjim became doctors before this period.

Happily there is good increase in the interest for higher education among Muslims in Ambur.  The credit for this goes to The Ambur Muslim Educational Society, which has established the following institutions :

  1. Mazharul Uloom College offering many UG and PG courses
  2. Mazharul Uloom Higher Secondary School
  3. Mazharul Uloom Aided Primary School
  4. Hasanath-e-Jaria Girls Higher Secondary School
  5. Hasanath-e-Jaria Girls Aided Primary School
  6. Mazharul Uloom Coaching Centre for Women for students of Correspondence degree courses

At present there are more than 5800 students in all these institutions.  The Society is managing them efficiently by providing good education and required facilities to the students.  New blocks were also constructed in the college and schools to cope up with the increasing number of students seeking admission in the schools as well as the college.

There are about 200 woman students in the Coaching Centre for B.Com and B.C.A. correspondence courses.  No doubt it is a good arrangement for the time being.  But a full-fledged college is a “must” for women in Ambur.  The Society has to look into it and do the needful.  It is already overdue.

The present President Mr. N.M. Zackeria Sahib and Hon. Secretary Mr. N. Mohammed Sayeed Sahib have improved the institutions by constructing new buildings, providing necessary amenities to the students and introducing new degree courses in the College.

On the whole it is heartening to know that the Muslim community in Tamil Nadu has started going in the right direction.  There are 6.52% or 43,34,848 Muslims in Tamil Nadu out of the total population of 6,65,24,746 people. Many schools and colleges, which they have started here are doing their best for the educational upliftment of the Muslim community.  Muslims are more educated only in those places where they have their own educational institutions.  We should try to improve the prevailing conditions further by all possible ways so that the community and country are benefited.

The Islamiah College, Vaniyambadi was the first Muslim College started bythe Muslim community in Tamil Nadu.  Then manycolleges were founded bythem in Chennai, Keelakarai, Ambur, Trichy, Adiramaptnam, Melvisharam and many other places.

The SIET (now Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College) College for Women started by Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed sahib in Chennai has played an important role in shaping the destiny of the Muslim community.  It is because of this college that there is at least some awakening among Muslim women for higher education.  It is noteworthy that Justice sahib established this college in the midst of strong criticism and opposition.  Now the community is reaping the maximum benefit from it.  A visionary cares for the community and is not worried about irresponsible critical rhetoric of anybody.
