N.M. YAHYA – THE GREAT VISIONARY

(Peshimam Nazeer Ahmed, B.Sc., M.A., M.A. M.Ed., M.Phil., Ph.D)

My Headmaster, Late N.M. Yahya Sahib, the great visionary of the Modern times; was born at Ambur, in the year 1911 to Natamkar Mohammed Moosa and applapillai Harija Bee.  His Primary Education was at Mazharul Uloom, Primary School and High School Education at Mazharul Uloom High School, Ambur.  He had passed his S.S.L.C. Examination in 1930.  He obtained his College Education from Madras Christian College, Tambaram.  When there was gloom of ignorance and illiteracy in Muslim Community, with a noble cause he entered the teaching profession.   For some time he was working as an untrained teacher at Mazharul Uloom High School Ambur.  In 1945, he joined Teacher’s Training College at Saidapet, Chennai.  Later he was appointed as a fully qualified trained B.T. Teacher at Karnool, the then undivided Madras Presidency from where he was transferred and posted at Vellore.  For the cause of Community he relinquished his Government service at Vellore and was appointed as Headmaster on 3rd October 1949, at Mazharul Uloom High School Ambur.  For more than three decades he served as a Headmaster.  He was awarded by Tamil Nadu Government the Best Teacher Award in 1971.  On 31st May 1972 he retired from service.

The contribution of Alijanab N.M. Yahya Sahib, to the parent body, the Ambur Muslim Educational Society and the Mazharul Uloom College in particular is commendable.  Alijanab N.M. Yahya Sahib, the known Scholar, Thinker, Educationist and the honoured teacher of the thousands and thousands of elites of Ambur has been the guide and philosopher for the Society and all its institutions.  As the Executive Assistant Secretary of Mazharul Uloom College since 1982, he has given a new dimension in the smooth administration of the college.  His dynamic and active involvement in the affairs of the college and his precious timely advice to the college has certainly brought the college to the limelight and its present glory.  He has ever been the source of inspiration to all.

He was a great scholar and author of number of text books.  His Mathematics text Book “AASAAN HISAAB” was introduced in Schools not only in Madras State but also in Delhi.  Generally he was known as “Tiger of Mathematics”, the doyen of minorities educational development and Messiah of the down trodden.  In later years of his life, he was passionately pleading for running a network of maktabs and schools every where so that no child suffers illiteracy and ignorance.

Since his student days reading Islamic books, listening commentary of the Qur’an and Hadith had been his favourite pastime.  Thus he gained sufficient knowledge of Islam.  He was not only a towering Islamic scholar and thinker but also a great upholder of liberal and national values as well as broader humanism.   Leading lights of Arabic Literature and Qur’anic studies admitted him very much.

He had participated thrice in the Tameer-e-Millet Meelad Essay Contest and won prizes on all the occasions.  First Prize –Gold Medal in 1973, for his essay on “Causes for the decline of Muslims”, Consolation prize in 1974 for the essay on “The present Day problems of the Arab World” and in 1985, the Second Prize Cash Award for the essay on “The Relation between Muslims and non-Muslims in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith.

He had contributed a number of articles of Islamic interest to Journals and Magazines, which prompted him to evince keen interest and ardent desire to write a comprehensive book in the Divine Origin of the Qur’an for the use of English Speaking inquirers, entitling “Al-Qur’an – The word of God”, published in the year 2001.  This book bridge the gap between faith and truth, a very significant comprehensive and convincing.  The words of Dr. A.S. Muhammed Rafee “It approaches the question of the divine origin of the Qur’an from as many angles as possible, ranging from prophesies to scientific data, it will not be a an exaggeration to say that this book is a Museum of facts and proofs pertaining to the subject matter.  The book will certainly increase and vitalize the Health of Muslims Faith”.

On 26th December 2002 the cruel hands of destiny snatched away an eminent citizen of 20th Century.  He was a great educationist, a powerful orator, a gifted writer and a great champion of education.  His loss to the community and to the nation is irreplaceable.  His greatness and the greatness of his service are such that no proper tribute can be paid in these columns.  His death virtually orphaned those whom he nurtured directly and indirectly during his long active life.

May Allah be pleased to grant the departed soul His forgiveness and pleasure, Aameen.
